They called us.

Honestly, we almost didn’t believe it at first. A Military Hospital? Inviting us? A small team from Durban who just cares deeply about food and security?

But they did. And we’re still processing it.

We packed our bags and made the long trip from Durban to Cape Town. We thought we were coming to share what we know. To offer something useful. To be helpful.

But somewhere between the meetings and the conversations, something shifted.

We realised we weren’t just there to give. We were there to receive. To learn. To be moved. And we were.

Here’s something we’ve been thinking about a lot…

Food waste is pain.

We know that sounds strong. But stay with us.

Imagine you’re in a hospital bed. Weak. Scared. Recovering from something that shook your whole world. Now imagine the food that could give you strength, thrown away. Wasted. Gone.

That’s not just about leftovers. That’s about dignity. About healing. About hope.

It’s like throwing away chemo drugs. Like discarding surgical tools. Unthinkable, right?

That’s exactly what food waste is in a place of healing. It’s throwing away someone’s chance to get better.

The 2 Military Hospital understands this in their bones.

The committee we met didn’t treat food security like a side project. They treated it like what it is, essential care. They know that medicine alone doesn’t heal a person. Food does. Rest does. Being seen and cared for does.

And somehow, they saw that in us. That we get it too.

We sat with them. We listened to their stories. We saw the weight they carry and the fire in their hearts. These are people who serve quietly. Who show up every day for soldiers and civilians alike. Who carry so much and ask for so little.

We left Cape Town different.

Not because we achieved something. Because we were seen. Because they believed in what we do. Because they made us feel like our small work actually matters.

When a hospital like the 2 Military Hospital invites you in and says, “We see value in you,” you don’t forget that.

You carry it with you.

Food waste is pain.

But the opposite is also true.

Every meal rescued is healing. Every plate delivered is hope. Every act of food security is love in action

Thank you, 2 Military Hospital.

Thank you for welcoming us. For teaching us. For reminding us why we do what we do.

We came from Durban with humble hearts. We left with fuller ones
